FAQ

Common questions

Why does my SMS character limit change when I add an emoji?

Standard SMS text uses GSM-7 encoding, which allows 160 characters per message (153 per part if it's split into multiple parts). The moment you add an emoji or certain accented characters, the message switches to Unicode (UCS-2) encoding, which only allows 70 characters per message (67 per part). This tool detects that switch automatically and shows the real number.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Every count, the readability score, and the SMS math are calculated locally in your browser as you type. Your text is only saved in your own browser's local storage so you don't lose it on a refresh — it's never sent to a server.

How accurate is the readability score?

It uses the Flesch Reading Ease formula with a standard syllable-estimation algorithm — the same general approach most online readability tools use. It's a very good approximation, not a dictionary-perfect count, so treat it as a helpful guide rather than an exact figure.

What counts as a word or a sentence?

Words are counted as whitespace-separated chunks of text. Sentences are counted by splitting on ., !, and ? followed by a space or the end of the text — like most counters, this can slightly over- or under-count text with abbreviations (like "e.g." or "Dr.").

Is there a text length limit?

No. Paste as much as you like — a tweet or an entire manuscript — there's no artificial cap.
